Psychology

Available at every ANSA Health clinic.

Therapy for adults, children, adolescents and couples, with evidence-based approaches chosen to suit what you are working on.

Adults

We offer therapeutic services for people from all walks of life who have a desire for self-reflection and personal growth. We aim to help clients explore their challenges and strengths in order to maximise their potential and find meaning in their life.

Our aim is for you to feel empowered to share your experiences in a safe environment and build an understanding about what’s happening for you so you can work towards your therapeutic goals. We incorporate evidence-based interventions tailored to meet your needs and goals. These therapies focus on building awareness of your thoughts and feelings and how these manifest in both helpful and unhelpful behaviours, with yourself and with other people.

Our ultimate goal is to leave you feeling capable of managing challenging emotions, acknowledging and re-framing unhelpful thinking patterns, and altering behaviours that are no longer serving you.

Children and adolescents

Therapy can help children and adolescents with a range of issues, including managing emotions, anxiety, depression, challenging behaviour, social difficulties, school refusal, trauma, family separation, and coping with change or life stress. Young people from a variety of backgrounds come to therapy and make huge gains. The earlier you seek psychological support, the better for your child and your family.

During therapy, we will work with you and your child to establish healthy patterns of behaviour and communication. While it may be your child who needs the most support, we strongly believe that sustainable and effective change is achieved through parental involvement and, where necessary, communication with the school.

Children thrive when there is a connected care team surrounding them. Depending on the age of your child and their presenting concerns, we may decide to meet with you, as a parent or carer, individually for the first session. This allows us to take a detailed history and gives you a space to speak honestly about the difficulties your child is having and the therapy goals you have for them.

Couples therapy

There are many reasons couples reach out for support in their relationships, including illness, communication, conflict, intimacy and infidelity.

Understandably, couples want to reengage and connect with each other and get back on track as a team. Couples therapy with our psychologists is a way to work towards breaking the cycles you find yourself in and moving towards a fulfilling relationship.

We provide Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and other evidence-based therapies for couples. Our therapy process explores the unmet needs you have and looks at how these are linked with negative emotions and behaviours. In therapy we seek to interrupt these patterns and highlight new ways of working through your challenges.

Please speak to our team to book a couples therapy session. Medicare rebates are not available for couples therapy, and private health funds vary, so please check your cover before you book.

Assessments

Available at Geelong, Ballarat and Melton.

Cognitive, psychoeducational and behavioural assessments, to clarify what is contributing to a difficulty and inform decisions about treatment, school, work or other supports.

Psychological assessments are conducted for many reasons. You might want to learn about your intellectual capacity, understand your child’s learning profile or behaviours, or you may be worried you have a memory or neurological impairment. We offer a range of assessment services, including cognitive, educational, neuro-developmental and behavioural assessments.

The cost of an assessment varies with the time it takes. Please ask us for a quote for the assessment you are considering.

Cognitive

Cognitive assessments are structured, standardised assessments administered by a psychologist to help understand a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses in verbal comprehension, non-verbal problem solving, processing speed and working memory. You or your child may need a cognitive assessment if you are concerned about developmental delays or learning difficulties, or want to be assessed for giftedness.

You will undertake one of the following, depending on age:

  • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI)
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)
  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)

Psychoeducational

Psychoeducational assessments help you understand your child’s academic profile. You may need one if you are concerned about specific learning disorders, such as dyslexia, or behavioural difficulties, such as ADHD, or if you are working out eligibility for funding and educational support. They can also help assess for giftedness.

A psychoeducational assessment is made up of a cognitive assessment and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT). If a specific learning disorder is identified, other tests may also be recommended, and your psychologist will discuss that with you at the time.

Behavioural

Behavioural assessments help you understand functional difficulties that may be contributing to your child’s behaviour. Your child may need one if you are concerned about their ability to plan, make decisions or organise themselves, or about acting impulsively or not sitting still. These behaviours can be developmentally appropriate, so an assessment is warranted when they are causing real difficulty day to day.

Behavioural assessments use the Behavioural Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3).

Speech Therapy

Available at Geelong and Melton.

Assessment and therapy for speech, language, communication and social interaction, delivered in therapy blocks that follow the school terms.

Speech therapy plays a vital role in helping children develop the communication and language skills they need to thrive in everyday life. A speech pathologist can assess and support children who have difficulties with speech sounds, language development, stuttering, voice quality, or understanding and using language effectively. Early intervention can make a significant difference to a child’s confidence, social skills and ability to learn at school.

Our speech pathologists provide personalised therapy tailored to each child’s needs. That may include support for articulation and speech clarity, language development, and literacy skills such as reading, spelling and comprehension. We also work with children whose communication is affected by developmental delays, autism or hearing difficulties.

How therapy blocks work

We work with families using a therapy block model in line with the school terms, alternating terms on and off direct therapy. Speech therapy is in high demand, and this helps us provide fair and timely access for all families. Each block has set goals, a clear timeframe of six to eight sessions, and a review at the end. A block may be individual or group sessions.

Intentional breaks between blocks are often recommended to:

  • prevent burnout for children and families
  • make room for other supports, such as OT or psychology
  • support transitions, such as starting a school year or welcoming a new sibling
  • give time to consolidate and generalise the skills learned in therapy

Between blocks

Between scheduled blocks we can offer reviews and other therapy formats, and your speech pathologist will work with you to make a plan that suits your family.

  • Supported home programs, parent-led with check-ins from the speech pathologist.
  • Collaborative blocks, planned jointly with educators or support staff.
  • Group programs that target and consolidate communication goals in a natural setting, such as Lego group, DOTs and Brave Buddies.

Audiology

For children, early detection is essential to support speech, language and social development. For adults, the right solution can make a real difference to daily communication and wellbeing.
